A step-by-step way to work
Write your real draft first
Get your actual thinking down, mess and all. Editing clarifies thought; starting from AI skips that.
Ask for ruthless cuts
Have it remove wordiness, hedging, and throat-clearing, and lead with the main point.
Restructure answer-first
Ask it to reorganise so the conclusion comes first and support follows.
Flag the vague
Have it mark every abstraction ('synergy', 'streamline', 'leverage') and demand a concrete replacement.
Read it back for truth
Make sure the clearer version still says what you mean — clarity can accidentally change meaning.
Real prompts, and what good output looks like
Edit for clarity, lead with the point, and flag vague words: 'I wanted to reach out and circle back on the topic of the roadmap, as there are a number of considerations we should probably think about leveraging going forward in terms of our prioritisation framework.'
Edited: 'We need to change how we prioritise the roadmap. Here are three options.'
Cut: 'reach out', 'circle back', 'a number of considerations', 'probably think about', 'going forward' — all filler.
Vague flags: 'leveraging' (leverage how?), 'considerations' (which ones?). The original took 35 words to say nothing; the edit commits to a point.
A prompt you can reuse
Fill in the highlighted parts and paste it into your AI tool of choice. Edit the output — it's a starting point, not a finished answer.
Edit this for clarity. Lead with the point, cut filler, and flag every vague word — but don't change my meaning. My draft: [paste] Audience: [who reads it] Please: 1. Rewrite it answer-first, in plain language. 2. Cut wordiness, hedging, and throat-clearing. 3. Flag every abstraction/buzzword and ask me for a concrete replacement where you can't infer one. 4. Tell me if anything I wrote is so vague you couldn't tell what I meant — that's usually unclear thinking, not just unclear writing.
What AI gets wrong here
Polishing muddled thinking
AI makes unclear ideas sound clear without making them clear, producing fluent emptiness.
Meaning drift
Aggressive editing can subtly change what you were saying.
Homogenised voice
Over-edited text loses your voice and sounds like everyone else's AI-edited text.
Unclear writing is usually unclear thinking, and AI can polish prose without touching the muddle beneath — the one thing that most needs fixing. It's an excellent editor for ideas you've actually worked out. The point you're making, and the clarity of the thought behind it, remain yours to get right.
