Interview Question Types with AI

AI is a genuinely effective interview-prep partner across every PM question type — product design, strategy, analytical, behavioural — because it can pose questions on demand and critique your structured answers. The limit: interviews assess your thinking under pressure, so leaning on AI for answers you don't understand will show.

1How to use AI for this

A step-by-step way to work

1

Name the type and role

Tell AI the question type and the company/level so practice matches the real bar.

2

Practise out loud, then get critique

Answer first, then paste your answer and ask for a structured critique against a known framework.

3

Have it play a sharp interviewer

Ask it to interrupt, probe, and push back the way a real interviewer would.

4

Drill variety

Get fresh prompts so you build adaptable structure, not memorised answers.

5

Internalise the structure, not the script

Learn the framework so you can apply it to a question you've never seen.

2Worked examples

Real prompts, and what good output looks like

Critiquing a product-design answer
Your prompt

Question: 'Design a product for elderly people who feel lonely.' Here's my answer [pasted]. Critique it against the CIRCLES method.

What good output looks like

Comprehend: you clarified the user well — good. Identify customer: you jumped to one segment without naming alternatives; mention you considered others.

Report needs: solid. Cut/prioritise: you listed solutions but didn't prioritise them against a clear goal — the interviewer will push here.

List solutions: creative. Evaluate trade-offs: thin — you didn't weigh them. Summarise: missing; always close by restating your recommendation.

Biggest gap: prioritisation and trade-offs — that's where this answer loses points.

Targeted coaching: AI maps your answer to the framework and names the weakest stage. That's hard to get from solo practice.
3Copy-paste template

A prompt you can reuse

Fill in the highlighted parts and paste it into your AI tool of choice. Edit the output — it's a starting point, not a finished answer.

Reusable prompt
Be my PM interview coach for [question type: product design / strategy / analytical / behavioural]. Target level/company: [e.g. senior PM].

Round 1: Ask me one realistic question of that type, then wait for my answer.
Round 2: After I answer, critique it against [the relevant framework, e.g. CIRCLES] — stage by stage, naming my weakest part and how to fix it.
Round 3: Play a tough interviewer and ask 2 follow-up probes that pressure-test my answer.
Don't write my answers for me — make me produce them; you critique.
4Common pitfalls

What AI gets wrong here

Memorising AI answers

Reciting an AI-generated answer collapses the moment an interviewer probes off-script.

Do this instead: Use AI to critique your answers and drill the framework; never walk in with memorised scripts.

Practising the wrong bar

Generic questions may be easier than the target company's.

Do this instead: Tell AI the level and company so the difficulty and rubric match reality.

No follow-up pressure

Solo practice lacks the interruptions real interviews have.

Do this instead: Have AI play a tough interviewer with probes, not just pose-and-praise.
The judgment that stays yours

AI is one of the best interview-prep tools available — endless questions, instant framework critique, a sparring partner that pushes back. But the interview measures your structured thinking in real time, and that fluency only comes from doing the reps yourself. Practise with AI relentlessly; just make sure the thinking you show up with is your own.
